Risk Assessment – What is it and is it for me?

2 minute read

A risk assessment is something we do intuitively all the time, and something that helps us return home safely at the end of the day. If you drove to work this morning, chances are you were continuously “assessing the risk” of whether it is safe to turn and go across the intersection. This is just one example of a risk assessment.

If your workers, colleagues or yourself have ever had an injury at work whether it be a sore finger from gripping repetitively, a sore neck from sustained postures or a sore back from lifting heavy objects, a risk assessment is something that you should be very interested in.

What is a risk assessment?

A risk assessment is the process of working to reduce the level of risks that workers are exposed to while conducting their role.

What is the benefit of a risk assessment?

When implemented, the management of risk can enable an organization to:

  • increased likeliness of achieving; injury reduction, health & wellbeing, returning home safely
  • enhance health and safety performance
  • encourage proactive injury management
  • comply with relevant legal and regulatory requirements
  • establish a reliable basis for decision making and planning
  • improve implementation of effective controls

How long does a risk assessment usually take?

This varies depending on how many tasks you would like assessed and the depth of the report. On average 30 minutes to assess each task and 30 minutes to write a report for each task.

What sorts of things can come out of a risk assessment?

When eliminating a risk in the workplace, the first thing we look for is, “can this task be eliminated?”.  For example, a remote control garage door would eliminate the manual lift of the door. If the task can’t be eliminated can we use equipment to do this for us? E.g hoists that eliminate a carer needing to lift patients. If not, is there PPE we need or stretches to reduce the risk of injury?

Client experiences

Workplaces that we work with say that after a risk assessment has been conducted, we have recommended such simple changes that make the world of difference. That their workers feel listened to and their injury rate reduces.

Did you know that we offer risk assessments to local businesses? If this is something that interests you, please get in touch with us on 08 7123 4174 or send us an email at info@tanunda.physio.
