Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – What Is It?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is the compression of the median nerve in the “carpal tunnel” at the level of the wrist.
It is a common condition of the hand that doesn’t discriminate against who it affects. People who suffer from the syndrome vary from computer workers, gamers, to tradies who use their wrists and hands a lot.
What is the Carpal Tunnel?
There are 8 carpal (small, wrist) bones that form the base of the tunnel and a ligament (transverse carpal ligament) that forms the top.
The structures running through the tunnel include the medial nerve, muscles and blood vessels.
The median nerve sits most superficial in the tunnel and is the structure most susceptible to compression, which causes pain and disability.
