Reformer Pilates: Mastering the Plank
The Plank is often talked about as one of the staple “core” exercises people do.
The problem with a traditional plank is that it is 100% static. That is, there is no movement involved at all. And it is for this reason its actual value is debated.
True core stability relies on controlling our body through movement.
Keeping key parts still, while moving others.
Using the pilates reformer we can take the standard plank and add movements that can not only add relevance to the exercise, but also different levels of challenge!
Are you ready to take your plank and core stability to the next level?
Reformer Plank Series
This is a more challenging series of pilates exercise on the reformer.
The change of positions means that the reformer’s function changes from an assistive to resistive function. The more springs the easier the plank, less springs less stability so it’s much harder to keep balanced and really working the abdominals.
It really gets the legs burning with the addition of the leg press. Also it fires up the obliques with the side planks, which can be commonly weak.
Having the weight bearing and stability component for the upper limb can be quite challenging if someone has had a shoulder injury or weakness but is quite safe as there is minimal movement.
To make this even harder, lowering the foot bar to make the plank more horizontal adds maximal gravity force.
Reformer pilates is one of the best forms of low impact exercise that can be tailored to your level and needs – from basic exercise to high resistance and high challenge movements!
