Types of Massage

There are many types of massage therapy and you may find yourself confused or wondering what the different terms mean!

To be honest, some terms are just different names for the same thing. However, some are completely different.

Read below to better understand the different terms.

Remedial Massage

Specialised techniques to locate and repair tissue.

These treatments are tailored to each client and can be gentle or strong to achieve the desired result.

Sports Massage

Tailored to sporting injuries and ailments, sports massage may be for anyone from the casual exerciser to the elite sportsperson.

Designed to

  • prevent and relieve injuries associated with exercise
  • help increase endurance and performance
  • reduce recovery time.

Sports massage may be used pre or post event or as part of a high intensity training blocks.

Deep Tissue Massage

Focuses on the deeper layers of muscle fibres, and uses a specific pressure along the muscle to loosen muscle tension, and encouraging blood and oxygen to circulate.

Deep tissue massage can be used for a variety of sports injuries and chronic pain conditions.

Relaxation Massage

Relaxation massage applies varying pressure techniques to muscles in the direction of flow of blood returning to the heart.

It is relaxing and invigorating.

It is beneficial to reduce stress, both emotional and physical, and can be part of an ongoing maintenance program.

Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic drainage is a gentle, rhythmical treatment performed by a specially trained lymphatic massage therapist to stimulate the circulation of lymph fluid around the body.

This helps to rapidly speed up the removal of wastes and toxins and can aid in the reduction of swelling after injury or surgery and provide a boost to your immune system.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release focuses on reducing pain by easing the tension and tightness within the tissue surrounding and supporting the muscles throughout your body and is often used over a broad area of muscle and tissue rather than at single points.

Muscle Energy Techniques

Muscle Energy Technique is a manual therapy that uses gentle contractions to relax and lengthen muscles and normalise joint motion.

It can be applied safely to almost any area of the body and is used by people with reduced movement and by athletes as part of injury prevention.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger points are hypersensitive, tightened areas in muscles become acute sources of pain that can affect muscle length and refer pain if left untreated.

Treatment involves a deep sustained pressure on the trigger points and stretching.

Massage as a part of physiotherapy treatment

Massage is commonly used in physiotherapy treatment.

A physiotherapist is trained to diagnose pain and injury as well as identify the cause of pain.

We look to do more than just offer short term pain relief.

When you see a physiotherapist, you will undergo an assessment to determine the source and cause of your problem.

We have many “tools in our toolkit” to help us address these issues and we will discuss with you the most effective options we have to help you feel better and achieve your goals. Massage is one of these tools and if we believe it can help, and you agree, we will use it as part of your treatment plan.

In addition, we will help you understand what can be done to not only have short term relief from a massage but long term changes. We want to help you prevent ongoing or recurring pain.

Massage at Tanunda Physio & Health

Some of these styles of massage above may be offered by your physiotherapist at Tanunda Physio & Health and some may be more appropriate with a remedial massage therapist.

If you have a targeted pain or recurring issues a more specific management is desirable and we encourage you to visit us for an assessment.

If you are unsure, give us a call and let us know what you are having problems with. We can discuss with you how we can help.
