Clinical Pilates- What and Why?

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of low impact exercise and movement which is focused on core strength and control of the whole-body.

The pilates model of exercise focuses on:

  • Postural Alignment
  • Control
  • Breathing
  • Concentration
  • Relaxation
  • Flow
  • Precision
  • Stamina

Why is Clinical Pilates Different?

Clinical Pilates is instructed by a physiotherapist with additional Pilates qualifications who tailors a pilates program to your individual needs.

This means your injury, condition or movement is first assessed by a physiotherapist and then directly applied to an individualised exercise programme. A clinical pilates tailored program ensures the focus is on YOUR rehabilitation and YOUR movement goals. It focuses on improving your performance or strength in sport, rehabilitation after an injury and is highly beneficial post-partum.

The difference in a non-clinical pilates setting is your exercises are not individualised and you perform the same movements as the group or class.

Equipment and Floor Based Exercise to Suit Your Needs

Pilates can be practiced two different ways; on a mat or in a studio using specialised equipment.

Equipment may include a reformer, trapeze table, ladder barrel and Wunda chair. This allows for even more advanced treatment options.

Mat Based exercises are perfect for home and may use small equipment such as resistance bands, pilates balls, slider discs or simply your body.

Floor exercises are perfect for home and may be a standalone routine, or to compliment an equipment based program performed in the clinic.

Clinical Pilates 1-on-1, in Groups and at Home

Clinical pilates can be performed in small groups, where you will perform an individualised program under supervision and in 1-1 sessions where you will have the most direct supervision, assessment and guidance.

Many people will also choose to have a program developed for them to perform at home with ongoing review to make sure they are doing it right and progressing over time.

We will work with you to understand what works for you and tailor your program to suit your lifestyle.

Clinical Pilates at Tanunda Physio & Health

We understand every person and their body has different capabilities. Therefore our pilates sessions are one on one with either Georgia or Maddison, our clinical pilates physiotherapists.

These one on one sessions allow specific pilates techniques to be taught and your capabilities assessed using our pilates reformer. Georgia and Maddison will assess your needs and customise a program that you feel confident in performing. To compliment the equipment pilates, a mat program is also provided for you to complete at home in your own time.

Once you and your therapist feel confident with your technique and exercises you can join our mat based clinical pilates classes led by our physiotherapist Georgia. These classes are once again individualised to your specific needs allowing you to move and challenge yourself at your own pace.

If you’ve never tried pilates before, fear not. We are here to help you strengthen and move your body to achieve your exercise goals.

Want to Start Clinical Pilates?

The first step is booking an introductory assessment session with one of our clinical pilates physiotherapists, Georgia or Maddison.

In this initial assessment your physiotherapist will gather information such as history, current physical activity and fitness goals. Alongside this they will assess your movement, motor control and muscle strength.

We believe it is important to become familiar with the basic principles before adding more complex exercises into your pilates routine.
